The future is such an unpredictable thing, yet, this is an inevitable question that we are encouraged to answer while applying to internships, jobs and college.
There are some people that have planned their entire life out, but reality is, a fraction of a second is all it takes to change the course of history. Then there are others that are battling between many different options and are worried about making the wrong decisions.
Whether it's one ambition or a million, none of us are fully confident about where we see ourselves after college. With the chaos of adolescence, I’m sure that getting into college and surviving high school is what occupies the larger part of our thoughts and worries.
Ever since we were little, adults in our lives have constantly told us that anything is possible, so our young minds would always come up with crazy supernatural futures that we wanted. As a little kid, I wanted to be a bionic superhero with superspeed like Bree from Lab Rats or a princess like Sofia the First.
Anything is still possible, but now that we’re getting to the point of adulthood where reality is coming toward us at a million miles per hour. We are expected to start coming up with serious answers to this question so we can make it in the real world.
The good thing about this question is that you don’t need to know exactly what your end goal is. The conundrum is that you won’t know how far you will be from accomplishing it. Reaching your goals are exciting achievements. To get to that point though, we all have to go through a whirlwind of emotions. Whether it's failing a class, getting injured in a game or not getting the internship you really wanted, the road to success is never a straight one. There are always intersections where you’ll have to make difficult decisions on which way to go. Left or right turns that delay your plans, and U-Turns that are great setbacks.
So, when answering open-ended questions like these, it would be important to keep your end goal in mind because in 5 years, we’re going to be somewhere along the long road to our desired destinations.
The best part about dreams is when we reach them, we have the power to create more, so life is essentially a wild drive along this imaginary road and a continuous question of where we will be in five years.
Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “The purpose of life, after all, is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.”
One day, when I get older, and probably won't have five more years left to ask myself this question, I’d like to look back and have absolutely no regrets. To know that I worked my hardest to achieve my goals, and in the process I didn’t let the failures stop me.
If I just exist for the rest of my life and look back I would be telling myself that I should have done more. We’re given this one life and we’re supposed to make it count. There's no better time than now; And what we do now will determine our future.
To dream and aspire requires one to experience life and never shy down. And if you think about it, all accomplishments essentially start with a dream.
So where do I see myself in five years? Living my life to the absolute fullest.
Very Nice!
